Read, Google, read!

My new glasses for serious reading eh!

I finally decided to use Google Reader to keep tabs on all the blogs and even news sites that I read regularly. And I must say it’s really, really easy to use. I was one of those daunted by the whole tech-speak of RSS Feeds but now I’m converted! Sorta like the days I thought torrents sounded more like torture. Ahh, memories.

Anyway. Trust you me, using the Reader is simply simple and it saves you a whole lot of time from going manually blog to blog. That way, you don’t have to sing “I don’t want to miss a thing” because Google Reader won’t let you! Erm, heh. Besides, most of you have GMail accounts anyway, might as well utilise this service foc. If not, there’re other sites like Bloglines.

It’s kinda odd promoting such a service (in such lame fashion too) but well, I pity myself for not having seriously looked into it when someone else had started using Bloglines a long time back. So please, don’t make the same mistake I did, kids. :(

Embrace the technology!

Oh and yeah, I imported those links to my blogroll here so now you see all the stuff I read! ;D

wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Welcome! Hmm. I should get paid for this haha.

I just realised I have an unused category called “Grammatical Garage”. Lol, me and my alliterations. Sigh. I should remain true to my name. :P

    assalaamu alaikum,
not exactly clothing, but this du’aa should still apply, right?

Ilbas jadeedan, wa `ish hameedan wa mut shaheedan
Wear anew, live commendably and die a shaheed, ameen.

Ok, you’ve convinced me and I’ve signed up.

But it better be worth it or else I’ll be back here posting abuse.

    Asalaamu alaikum,
I’m truly flattered my blog is on your list.
I tried bloglines and google reader but for some reason, I always end up going back to the old fashioned way of reading blogs.

kati, hehe thanks for the du’a! There’s another one that comes to mind. Tublee wa yukhlifu Allahu ta’ala. May you wear it out and Allah replace it. :)

Abu Ilyas, it’s only worth it if you belieeeeeve in it (said like a true preacher). But the point really is to save time with such a tool. Sure it takes only a few minutes a day but accumulated, that’s a lot of time going around when two-thirds of the blogs you surf have no new posts or even comments. (sounding a little bitter there, Ed!)

Btw, that’s the other issue, subscribing to comments. I wish they were automatically included, but you actually have to have a separate comments feed.

Tasmiya, I really enjoy your blog. Sometimes I wonder though. Should I reply to every post and simply say that was good/funny, I loved it, etc. I mean I don’t want to come across as a serial stalker. :P

Anyway, if in the end, you manage to do it well enough, then the old way of reading blogs is the best way eh! But just a note though that Google Reader has been improved recently, that’s why I’m sticking with it now. Much easier than when I gave it a “try” some time back.

How do I set up a comments feed? Do I need to copy the URL for specific posts into the reader?

  8. Editor April 3rd, 2007 11:38 pm

Nah, it’ll be one link for all comments made on the blog. There’s usually a link “Comments RSS” on blogs powered by WordPress. If you click on it, you’ll be directed to a page where you can then select to subscribe to it using Google Reader. Alternatively you could right-click and copy that link location into your Reader.

You know what I’ve realised is spooky though? If someone’s subscribed to your blog via Google Reader, they’ll see your published post fresh, without the subsequent edits you’ve made. I just read a blog entry on Reader that had been completely deleted off the original website.

Like I said, you seriously won’t miss a thing. But sucks for those of us who constantly change our minds then. :/

  10. Abu Ilyas April 11th, 2007 12:56 pm

That’s really scary because I normally publish and then start editing, as I prefer reading on the full screen over that squashed Satsuma window they give you on the edit page.

  11. Editor April 11th, 2007 10:41 pm

Hmm. You do know you can expand the Compose box right? And the Post Preview at the bottom when you save is as real as it gets - it’s only slightly smaller eh.

But anyway, now it’s failed to detect a blogspot update. Tsk. It’s kinda ironic considering blogspot is owned by Google. *shrug*

    Thank you for the link!
GoogleReader is indeed quite rocking. I’ve been using it to keep track of my blogroll for a few months now, but I, too, enjoy clicking over to the “real deal weblog” and reading the news posts there. GoogleReader is great for the notification, though. Unfortunately, I have a LOT of posts to catch up on, still. I should just click the “Mark all as read” button. =/

  13. Editor May 4th, 2007 11:34 pm

You’re welcome. :) I was a tad worried when I realised I’d added most of the blogs without bothering to inform the owners themselves… but your note has calmed my fears of dark repercussions. Heh, kidding, I didn’t think anyone would come after me armed with an axe. Really.

You know what I’ve realised is futile? Subscribing to news sites using Google Reader. Even daily checks can’t save you there. But maybe that’s my fault. I should subscribe to specific news tags instead of clumping them altogether. Oh well. Real deal’s the best, for sure!

  14. yasmine May 4th, 2007 11:46 pm

    Sorry, I meant:
enjoy clicking over to the “real deal weblog” and reading the NEW posts there.

No dark repercussions coming your way, no worries! =)

  15. Editor May 4th, 2007 11:55 pm

Oh, I didn’t even notice your typo, hehe. But seeing how I brought up news websites, I prolly subconsciously did!

Btw, I love your photos! *two thumbs-up*

  16. yasmine May 7th, 2007 2:45 pm

    Thanks, buddy! Much appreciated. =)

  17. [...] If anyone wants to, they could use one of the blog feed readers to let them know when I eventually (insha’ Allah) do resurface. That way it’d save people checking here for updates. I’ll let Editor explain how Google Reader works to save me typing it out. [...]
